Positions requiring a high school diploma/GED certificate must be obtained from a school/program accredited by the Department of Education and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.

The minimum education requirement for positions that allow for experience equivalency for an accredited degree is a high school diploma. Unless otherwise specified, an accredited degree must be obtained from a college or university listed with the U.S. Department of Education and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.

For positions with a salary grade of EX6 or higher that require an accredited degree, qualifying professional experience must be obtained AFTER the accredited degree is obtained.

Successful completion of a pre-employment criminal history/background check is required for all positions. Some positions require a post offer drug screen and/or physical.

Human Resources department conducts employment verifications of the information used to determine an applicant’s/employee’s eligibility for the position they are hired into.  Verifications include, but are not limited to, prior work experience, education, certifications, licenses, etc.

a) Any applicant hired into a classified or unclassified position will have the information used to determine their eligibility verified within the first 6 months of employment.

b) Any employee who changes job classifications via promotion/demotion/transfer into another classified or an unclassified position will have the information used to determine their eligibility verified within their promotional probationary period.

Work Experience:

• W-2 for all years of credit needed.
• 1099 for all years of credit needed.

Previous positions held or experience listed on employment application materials in which the employee was paid in cash or not tax verifiable is not accepted as qualifying experience toward any classified City position. 

Education/Certifications/Licenses:

• Copy of sealed transcripts from the educational institution.
• Letter of verification from the Department of Education
• Letter of verification from the school district if the school is no longer in existence
• Letter of verification from the organization or state that issued certification(s) or license(s)

In the event Human Resources is unable to verify enough information (including experience, education, certifications, licenses, etc.) to deem an employee eligible for the position in which they were hired or if the verification process establishes falsification of the application for that position, the Human Resources Department will instruct the hiring department to remove the employee from the position and recommend the employee for termination of City employment.   (City Charter, Sec. 908)
