Ordinance will prevent water shutoffs until at least Jan. 16

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas today—along with Sixth District At-Large Councilwoman Andrea Bough and Third District Councilwoman Melissa Robinson—sponsored an ordinance directing KC Water to reverse its plan to resume water shutoffs in November and to prevent any water shutoffs until at least January 16, 2021. This ordinance passed the City Council today.

“We have directed KC Water to reverse its plan to resume water shutoffs next month, and today also passed an ordinance to prevent water shutoffs in Kansas City until at least January 16,” said Mayor Lucas. “We have also ensured help for those struggling to pay their water bills. As a City Government, we have a duty to approach these unusual circumstances with compassion and understanding—which we will continue to do.

“No one should be without water services due to COVID-19,” said Councilwoman Bough. “There are ways to manage delinquent accounts that do not harm Kansas Citians who are financially struggling due to this pandemic. I am proud of the important step we’re taking today to keep residents’ water on.”
