The COVID-19 pandemic is not keeping our Municipal Drug Court from operating at full steam and this includes honoring new graduates. Please tune in on Thursday, Aug. 27, 2020, at 8:30 a.m. to hear Mayor Quinton Lucas and Drug Court Judge Courtney Wachal interact via Zoom and livestream with these determined men and women.

Drug Court has been around since 2002 and is one of the City’s three problem-solving courts that provide qualifying participants with services like substance abuse and/or mental health treatment in lieu of jail time. The other two are Mental Health Court and Veterans Treatment Court.

For at least one year, Drug Court participants receive intensive treatment, live in sober and stable housing, submit to random drug testing and review their progress frequently with the Drug Court judge and the Drug Court team. They must demonstrate at least six months of sobriety to complete the program. Their success is celebrated at the graduation ceremony. This virtual graduation demonstrates one more way Kansas City and the Municipal Court continue delivering services during this global pandemic.
