Twin Creeks Linear Park Design Competition
TWIN CREEKS LINEAR PARK DESIGN COMPETITION WINNERS PRESENT CONCEPTS
The winners of the Twin Creeks Linear Park Design Competition showcased their design concepts at a public exhibition on October 19, 2016 at the Platte County Resource Center. The three winning teams: Apliz Architecture of Borba, Portugal, Cadaster of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Small Wonders from Seattle and New York City each received $8,000 in prize money for their design concepts. At the exhibition, each team explained the rationale behind their design concepts.

ABOUT THE COMPETITION
In the spring of 2016, the City of Kansas City, Missouri launched an international design competition to solicit visions for a potential new linear park in the Twin Creeks area of the Northland. The park could stretch over 7 miles, include 1,000 acres of land, and connect Twin Creeks to Kansas City’s extensive trails network and to downtown.
The aim of the competition was to bring new ideas, energy, and visions to the development of Twin Creeks. Individual and multi-disciplinary design teams were invited to develop an overall conceptual design for the park and illustrations of four specified design scenarios within the park.
A nine member jury of leading local and national design professionals, artists, developers, and community leaders selected three winners out of 20 submissions from seven countries. The winning submissions will be used by the City to shape and inspire a new linear park and development in Twin Creeks.
OVERALL PARK VISION
Parkland is a critical piece of a community’s infrastructure, contributing to its vitality and desirability. In addition to providing a location for recreational opportunities, it can support natural habitats, shape quality development, facilitate multiple modes of transportation, help manage stormwater to reduce flood risks, and increase property values.
Design teams were asked to develop an overall conceptual design for the Twin Creeks Linear Park and its connections to future adjacent developments. Teams were directed to utilize the site of the riparian buffer setback zone, which varies in width along the length of the creeks from 25-250 feet, and to generally follow the existing stream setback.
Design teams were asked to provide illustrative designs for four design scenarios within the park:
- Trail connection to a development node
- Trail intersection with a parkway
- Trail interface with an adjacent residential development
The design scenarios are intended to be prototypical design elements that could be used and reused along the length of the park and were not tied to specific sites.
THE SELECTED DESIGN TEAMS
CADASTER is a design and research practice focused on urban transformation. Founded in 2014, the office has carried out design projects with the ambition of renewing public concern for the built environment. Holding firmly to the belief that urban issues must be considered in relation to various other areas of knowledge — economy, policy, politics, and ecology — Cadaster employs design as a diagnostic method to expose, and then intervene in, the dynamics of urban conditions.
Gabriel Cuellar, Associate AIA, is a designer and researcher based in New York. Following his bachelor studies in architecture at Carnegie Mellon University, he worked for five years in architecture and urban planning offices in Zurich, Paris, Rotterdam, and Amsterdam. Gabriel earned a Master of Architecture from the Berlage Institute in the Netherlands, focusing on urban scale projects in Latin America and Asia. Since 2012, he has led a county-wide revitalization project for the churches built by former slaves outside Houston, Texas. The project is supported by the local municipality and was awarded a grant from the AIA Houston.
Athar Mufreh is a designer and researcher based in New York. She earned a Bachelor of Architecture from Birzeit University and completed her Master in Intergrated Urbanism and Sustainable Development from Stuttgart University in 2012. Her professional experience has focused on historic buildings and the opportunity they present to developing urban areas.
Cadaster from Brooklyn, New York proposed three interweaving trails for cyclists and pedestrians, bridges over the creeks, and public spaces to connect adjacent neighborhoods and the park.
APLIZ – Antonio Apliz of Borba, Portugal is responsible for the Apliz design submittal. He has a five-year degree in landscape architecture from the Universidade de Evora and is recognized by APAP (Portuguese association of landscape architects – member of IFLA Europe). Currently, he is finishing a master’s degree in landscape architecture. Apliz’s career as a landscape architect has spanned 17 years. From 2001 until June of 2015, he has been invited to give lectures and seminars about environmental rehabilitation of quarries and landscape visual assessment at universities and schools. In his position at the technological center, he developed and cooperated with different offices on several types of projects such as urban spaces, private gardens, visual simulations and landscape assessments for various public projects integrated in the national infrastructures policies. In his most recent project, he worked on the high-speed train visual simulations and landscape assessments, wind farms and power lines.
APLIZ from Borba, Portugal proposed public spaces to connect people with the creeks and a sequence of parks that preserves forest and protects against flooding with ponds and meadows that are guided by the local ecology.
SMALL WONDERS is a collaboration between J. Liam Mahoney and Charles McDowell. Since graduating together from the Kansas State University College of Architecture, Planning & Design, Liam and Charles have collaborated on a number of efforts including volunteer charrettes, design competitions, and design explorations. A shared passion for multi-scalar design has brought together strong foundations in urban design, planning, and landscape architecture integrated with a systems ecology approach.
Small Wonders – a team from Seattle and New York City proposed a design focused on monarch butterfly habitat and opportunities for environmental education throughout the linear park.
Student Honorable Mention
Veronica Chan graduated from the University of California, Davis with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Landscape Architecture in June, 2016. She is currently enrolled in a two-year Master of Landscape Architecture degree from Cornell University, and is expected to graduate in 2018. Veronica is a student member of the American Society of Landscape Architecture, and during her senior year at UCD, she assumed a leadership role with the UCD Student Chapter of ASLA as professional, faculty, and student liaison.
