Art in the Park
It’s time once again for the City’s Art in the Park; this year’s site is City Market Park at 3rd and Main Street. Four local artists have been commissioned to do site specific temporary artworks on display from May 17th through the end of September. There will also be musical performances in the park on six consecutive Wednesdays (at lunchtime -11:30 – 1:30 p.m.) starting May 17th.
Art in the Park gives local artists the opportunity to gain experience in the public realm before moving on to larger, permanent public art commissions. Because the artworks are temporary, the artists are allowed a much larger range of designs and materials which might be unsustainable if the works were permanent.
Once more, the City is collaborating with the Downtown Council’s Art in the Loop program. This year there are three different locations for Art in the Loop: Art in the Park – City Market Park, Art in the Library – KC Public Central Library, and Art on the Line – KC Streetcar. The goal for Art in the Loop is to infuse the center of downtown with innovative and engaging temporary art that will refresh, intrigue, and surprise the people who work downtown, residents, visitors, and of course, lovers of art.
