Childhood lead poisoning prevention and healthy homes program
Lead poisoning is a serious health issue in Kansas City. Lead is a metal that was used in house paint and it is still used to make many things today.
Exposure to lead can cause many problems including brain damage, speech delay, kidney problems, even death. Adults and children can become lead poisoned but children are most at risk. People can be exposed to lead from their homes and their jobs. Lead can be found in chipping paint and dust, dirt outside or toys, jewelry and other products inside. Even some foods and make-up can contain lead.
The Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program works to protect Kansas City residents from the dangers of lead exposure by providing blood lead testing for children and pregnant women, case management for lead poisoned children, community education, product testing, lead hazard identification and home repair for qualified families.
Lead testing for children 6 years and younger and for pregnant women is available by appointment.
