Environmental Health Services (EHS) issues noise permits and inspects hotels and motels, child care facilities and swimming pools. Also within the EHS Program, Food Protection is responsible for the inspection of all food service establishments, retail grocery stores, taverns, schools, mobile units and temporary events. Air Quality Program
The Air Quality program continuously monitors for the presence of various air pollutants as part of the National Ambient Air Monitoring Network; ensures regulatory compliance by issuing permits to and monitoring industrial air pollution sources; and inspects and monitors asbestos removal projects. The Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program provides:
- Blood lead screening for children
- Medical case management for lead-poisoned children
- Home inspections for hazardous lead-based paint
- Free lead remediation for qualified residents
- Community outreach to inform the public of the dangers of lead-based paint in older housing
The program participates in lead research with other institutions and develops community resource material. For more information, call 816-513-6048.
Healthy Homes Rental Inspection Program
The Healthy Homes Rental Inspection Program provides regulations for minimum health and safety standards in rental housing in Kansas City, Mo. The program was brought forward by the community in the form of an initiative petition on Tuesday, August 7th, 2018.

Rat Control Program
The Rat Control Program has hired an exterminator who will perform free rat control services to people living in single-family homes or duplexes. It also provides rat control in sewers, vacant lots, vacant homes and City construction sites.
Please contact the Rat Control Program to report rat infestation in any of these areas at 311 or directly at 816-513-6010. The City does not perform rat control on commercial properties or apartment buildings, but can advise the owners of these properties on necessary steps to be taken.
