The Food Handlers Program trains and educates food handlers and managers in Kansas City, Mo. Every year about 48 million cases of food borne illness occur, and about 3000 people die. The vast majority of these illnesses and deaths could be prevented by proper training and following safe food handling practices.
Anyone who handles food prepared or served to the public should attend a food safety course. Under the current Food Code, food establishments may choose one of two options:
- A certified food service operations manager must be present in the food service area and on duty at all times of business operations, and must present a food manager permit or card to the authorized regulatory authority inspector at the time of inspection, or
- For food service operations where no manager is certified, 80 percent of required food handler staff shall obtain a three-year food handler card from the City of Kansas City, Mo., Health Department either upon completion of the food handler course through the Health Department, or upon the Health Department’s approval of a comparable food handler permit or card from another provider.
Establishments must select one of the two options; they may not alternate between them.
Training through the Health Department will provide information regarding good food handling practices. Topics include: proper hand washing techniques; proper cooling, and reheating temperatures; illnesses which must be reported; proper cleaning and sanitizing of equipment; food borne illnesses and what cause those illnesses; and much more.
Upon completion of the training course, the Food Handler Card will be issued. This card informs the public that the individual attended and passed the training course and is qualified to work in the food industry handling food. Please bring a photo ID with you when you pick up your food handler or manager card. Since 2004, this program has trained over 65,500 people in the Kansas City metropolitan area.

Classes are held in Biery Auditorium on the lower level of the Health Department building. Please be aware that if school districts close schools near the Health Department due to inclement weather, food classes will likely be cancelled as well. Please call to confirm possible weather-related Handler and Manager class cancellations.
