Kevin McManus represents Kansas City’s 6th District, which is the same district where he was born and raised. For the 2015-2019 council term, Mayor Sly James has appointed McManus to serve as Vice Chair of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and Co-Chair of the Legislative Committee. He has also been appointed to serve as a member of two additional committees: Finance and Governance; Ethics and Legal Review.
The 6th District encompasses the south and southwestern region of Kansas City, Missouri. Prior to being elected to the City Council, Kevin served as a State Representative in the Missouri General Assembly. He was first elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in 2010 and was re-elected 2012 and 2014.
As a State Representative, Kevin served as a chairman of the Kansas City Regional Bipartisan Caucus, which brought legislators of both parties together to work on issues that benefit the Kansas City area. Kevin was a leading voice for passing ethics and campaign finance reforms aimed at increasing transparency and accountability in state government. He fought for passage of legislation to end the tax credit, job-poaching “border war” between Kansas and Missouri. Kevin also passed legislation to support Kansas City’s free health clinic and support Kansas City’s veteran, mental health and drug courts.
Kevin is active in the South Kansas City Alliance, a coalition of neighborhood organizations, civic, educational and faith-based institutions, non-profits, and businesses dedicated to bringing about a unified vision for south Kansas City. He is also an attorney in private practice focused on business law and civil litigation in state and federal court. Kevin is a member of the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association, as well as the Missouri and Kansas Bars. In 2012, the Missouri Bar awarded Kevin a legislative award for his work to improve the administration of justice in the state of Missouri.
Kevin is a graduate from Rockhurst High School and earned his undergraduate degree in Government (summa cum laude) from the University of Notre Dame in 2001 and his law degree (with honors) from St. Louis University School of Law in 2006. Prior to his legal career, Kevin was a researcher at the Urban Institute in Washington, D.C., where he advocated for policies that benefited working families. Kevin resides in south Kansas City with his wife Alejandra (“Alex”) and their two sons.
