It was more than a year in the making, but for first time homeowner Tiarra Soto, it was well worth the wait. She watched as her modular home was set up on a lot she bought from the Land Bank of Kansas City- the first-ever home of its type erected on a Land Bank lot.
Soto said she loved apartment life, but knew she had to “grow up, get a home and stop throwing her money down the drain.” She was unable to find conventional homes in her budget, so she took a different route to home ownership.
Watching television one night, Soto saw a story on the Land Bank’s $1 home sale. She didn’t want to tackle a rehab project, but did notice the Land Bank had several vacant residential lots for sale. She fell in love with the modular home concept and bought four Land Bank lots near 20th and Agnes. “If it wasn’t for them (Land Bank), I wouldn’t have found the perfect land.”
She asked a lot of questions and Land Bank staff provided the answers. Soto said they walked her through the process, step by step, and made her home buying experience a lot easier.
“They’ve become my family,” she said. “They give it to you (straight), it doesn’t feel like something’s being thrown at you.
“It was always, ‘What did I want?’ ‘What are you looking for?’
“I couldn’t be happier!”
