Linwood Shopping Center won the prestigious 2019 Cornerstone Award, presented by the Economic Development Corporation of Kansas City (EDCKC). Neighborhoods and Housing Services Department (NHSD) Director/Assistant City Manager John A. Wood accepted the award during ceremonies inside the Marriott Muehlebach hotel May 29.
Redeveloped under the leadership of the NHSD, the $17 million effort revitalized the neighborhood surrounding Linwood Blvd. and Prospect Ave. Linwood Shopping Center was one of 22 finalists for the award.
EDCKC has presented the Cornerstone Awards for more than 30 years to recognize companies and projects strengthening Kansas City’s economy. The Cornerstone Award is the latest in a number of citywide accolades the Linwood Shopping Center redevelopment has received, including the 2019 Capstone Award presented by the Kansas City Business Journal.
In 2017, the City acquired the Linwood Shopping Center site, funded partial demolition, rebuilt the current SunFresh grocery store and remodeled the retail facade, spaces and parking lot in just 15 months. Wood said it was a perfect example of how a public/private partnership should work.
According to the EDCKC, $1.25 billion in capital investments were made and more than 3,700 new jobs were created in Kansas City in 2018.
