U.S. Conference of Mayors presents first leadership award to Renee Medlin, Procurement Manager
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Feb. 16, 2016
The U.S. Conference of Mayors has presented its first Leadership Award to Kansas City for providing innovating solutions to public agencies through the U.S. Communities Cooperative Purchasing Program.
Mayor Sly James praised Renee Medlin, Procurement Manager in the City’s Procurement Department, who accepted the award earlier this month during the U.S. Conference of Mayors 84th Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.
“In her nine years working for Kansas City, Renee has held several leadership positions in national, state and local procurement groups, including on the US Communities advisory board since 2011,” James said. “Renee and her Procurement Division teammates — Art Roberson and Keely Golden — are what Kansas City is all about.”
In presenting the award, Steve Benjamin, mayor of Columbia, S.C., said Kansas City has been a leader in the use of U.S. Communities contracts, saving taxpayer money and achieving administrative efficiency.
“U.S. Communities is the leading national government purchasing cooperative providing resources and solutions to local and state government agencies, school districts and nonprofits looking for the best overall supplier government pricing,” Benjamin said. “We want to take this opportunity to recognize Renee for her role as a U.S. Communities advisory board member and for her leadership and forward thinking.”
Thanks to Renee’s leadership, Kansas City is the lead agency on two U.S. Communities contracts — travel services and utility vehicles, James said.
The co-op was founded in 1996 as a purchasing partnership of the Association of School Business Officials, the National Association of Counties, the National League of Cities and the U.S. Conference of Mayors. More than 55,000 registered users take advantage of U.S. Communities contracts to procure more than $1.8 billion in products and services annually.
