FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 7, 2018
Members of the Bethel Family Worship Center, with paint brushes and gardening tools in hand, are descending on the home of Janice Smith on Saturday, June 9, in the latest ‘Love Thy Neighbor’ project. Smith will have the back of her home painted, her front porch stained and her yard landscaped from 8 a.m. to noon.
Much of the work already done to Smith’s home at 4042 Bales was done by ‘Christmas in October’ volunteers and ‘Love Thy Neighbor’ volunteers are finishing the job.
“She (Smith) just needs a little neighborly love,” said Shawn Kirkwood, coordinator of the ‘Love Thy Neighbor’ initiative.
The ‘Love Thy Neighbor’ program is the brainchild of 5th District Councilwoman Alissia Canady, chairwoman of the city’s neighborhoods and public safety committee. The city’s Neighborhoods and Housing Services Department (NHSD) provides organizational assistance, but ‘Love Thy Neighbor’ is a volunteer program and not funded by the City of Kansas City.
Kirkwood has identified several other KCMO homeowners who could benefit from ‘Love Thy Neighbor’ effort, but said it can only continue if other congregations and neighborhood groups come forward and express interest in volunteering.
