To improve City Planning’s process for approval of work proposed to occur in the regulatory floodplain, the Water Services Department (WSD) Stormwater Division will now perform all of the technical review for determination of compliance to the FEMA floodplain maps and City ordinance. Previously, these review functions were shared among different groups.
As the WSD Stormwater Division is the official keeper of the City’s floodplain maps, and as that division is directly involved in flood mitigation projects, this change places the floodplain development permit review in the same workgroup as those functions for efficiency and access to expertise.
Please note that the application process does not change from the customer’s perspective. Floodplain development permit applications will continue to be made to our CPD Permits Division, 5th Floor City Hall. CPD will continue to handle the administrative process, including issuance of the floodplain development permits following approval by WSD. The applicant will now have a single point of contact for technical questions in the WSD reviewer.
By regulating construction in the floodplain, the City is able achieve reductions in flood insurance rates for its citizens. For detailed information regarding floodplain construction requirements, consult Information Bulletin 120 or Floodplain Management – Ordinance Chapter 28. Questions regarding this new procedure may be directed to Acting Plans Review Division Manager Bill Watson at Bill.firstname.lastname@example.org or 816-513-1574.
