Civilian Hiring Process
Those interested in a civilian career with the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department have an employment process to follow as well. Applications are accepted for current vacancies only, with the exception where applications are accepted at all times for the following positions:
- Automotive Mechanic
- Building Operations Tech (Maintenance Custodian)
- Detention Facility Officer
- Patrol Desk Clerk
Element Specific Interview
Applicants are interviewed by members assigned to the element with the vacancy. Civilian positions are unique, which gives the members of the vacant element the opportunity to ask specific questions with appropriate follow up questions.
Pre-Employment Polygraph Examination
Applicants may proceed to the polygraph examination, which is administered by a qualified Polygraph Examiner. This test will cover criminal activity, drug usage, integrity, truthfulness and employment history.
The background investigation will cover pertinent facts regarding the applicant’s character, work history and any criminal or traffic records.
Certain Positions may require a Psychological Exam. This interview is conducted by a certified psychologist, after a job offer has been made.
Certain positions may require a physical examination. This exam is conducted by a certified medical doctor and will take place after a job offer is made.

The application form below should be printed and completed by the applicant after they receive a scheduled appointment with a member of the Employment Section. The applicant will bring the completed form to their scheduled appointment. Mailed or e-mailed applications will not be accepted.
