Police emphasize necessity of reporting suspected child abuse
KCPD’s Crimes Against Children detectives investigated 940 cases of child abuse in 2014. The public’s help is needed to protect these vulnerable children, and tomorrow, residents are requested to where blue to drive that message home.
Friday, April 10, is Wear Blue Day in Recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month. Because of a recent trend of child abuse and deaths resulting from abuse, members of KCPD’s Special Victims Unit will be attending the Kansas City Child Abuse Coalition’s roundtable discussion at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the KCPT studios, 125 E. 31st St. The discussion will include advocates, legislators and area prosecutors from Cass, Clay, Platte and Jackson counties.
The theme of this year’s Child Abuse Prevention Month is “Be Their Voice: Speak Up to Prevent Child Abuse.” Everyone is encouraged to protect our community’s children by reporting suspected child abuse or neglect. Anyone can anonymously call the state’s child abuse hotline (in Missouri, it’s 1-800-392-3738) or 911. That call could save a child’s life and/or significantly improve their quality of life.
In 2014, KCPD investigated 201 cases of physical abuse, 369 cases of sexual abuse, 119 cases of endangering the welfare of a child and 251 other child abuse cases.
In Missouri, children younger than 4 years old are most likely to be victims of child abuse. Lorenzo Estrada was in that age range. Lorenzo was Kansas City’s first homicide victim of 2015. On January 9, the 2-year-old went into cardiac arrest after he was severely beaten by his babysitter while his mother was at work. Mirsad Hamidovic has been charged with second-degree murder and felony child abuse.
Police encourage everyone to be on the lookout for signs of child abuse and neglect, and report it if they see it. For more information, go to http://preventchildabusekc.org.
