Police present personal safety course for local journalists
Following the fatal shooting of two television journalists in Virginia on Wednesday morning, the Kansas City Missouri Police Department will provide free personal safety training for local media members on Saturday.
“As police, we always are trying to make our community safer,” Chief Darryl Forté said. “That doesn’t just mean answering 911 calls. We want to educate and empower people about how to protect themselves, and we’ve done that for all kinds of people.”
The KCPD has provided safety training for many groups in the community and conducts monthly women’s self-defense courses.
Saturday’s training for local media personnel will focus on being aware of surroundings and avoiding situations that could compromise personal safety. The training will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, at the Kansas City Regional Police Academy, 6885 N.E. Pleasant Valley Rd.
To RSVP for the event, e-mail Sarah Boyd in the KCPD Media Unit at sarah.boyd@kcpd.org. Please respond with your name and the name of the station or publication for which you work.
