The City of Kansas City, Missouri, Public Works Department has been awarded the 2018 American Public Works Association (APWA) Accreditation designation. The APWA Accreditation program recognizes public works agencies that go beyond the requirements of the management practices established nationally in the public works industry.
This accreditation indicates the department met all applicable documentation and practices over time. The City’s Public Works Department received the award at a ceremony during the Council Legislative Session on Thursday, April 26.
“The awarding of the APWA Accreditation shows we have dedicated ourselves to continuous improvement and excellence. The heroes of this prestigious APWA award are the public works and development staff whose mission is to provide services and programs that contribute to making Kansas City a great place to live, work and play,” says Public Works Director Sherri McIntyre.
The 280 employees in KCMO’s Public Works department have a significant amount of infrastructure to maintain with more than 6,500 lane miles of roadway, 95,000 streetlights, more than 600 traffic signals, and much more. Public Works also leads municipal parking operations, capital construction, street and traffic operations, signs and street markings, bridge inspections and many other activities in the public right-of-way. In addition, the department has collected multiple awards for its work on the KC Streetcar corridor, including a national award from the APWA for the smart city infrastructure the department manages along the streetcar corridor.
Most recently, the department restructured its sidewalk section to lead the city-funded GO KC sidewalk program, inspecting and repairing sidewalks citywide.
