The Revenue Division seeks to achieve the equitable collection of tax obligations through fair administration, courteous customer service, and consistent enforcement of local tax ordinances used to fund city priorities.
The Revenue Division primarily collects tax types that fund the daily operations of the City. This includes the one percent earnings tax on all wages earned in Kansas City, Missouri. While most employers withhold the earnings tax for their employees, all residents who live in the city limits are responsible for the earnings tax.
Other tax types collected by the Revenue Division include Business License, Utility Taxes, Convention and Tourism Taxes and Arena Fees. The Convention and Tourism Tax provides for improvements to Bartle Hall and the Truman Sports Complex and the Arena Fee provides for improvements to the Downtown arena.
The Revenue Division also collects special assessments issued by various City Departments for specific types of work performed on behalf of a property owner. Assessments include costs to abate trash and weeds, cost of board-up of dangerous buildings, demolition of dangerous buildings, sidewalk repair and replacement, sewer improvements and others.
The City is proud to offer Quick Tax, an online system that may be used by taxpayers to file returns and make payments for all tax types collected by the Revenue Division including special assessments on properties. Quick Tax may also be used to make address and name changes to your accounts with the Revenue Division or view notices and letters sent by the Revenue Division. New businesses may also register online in place of submitting a Registration Application (Form RD-100).
