Scott Wagner represents the 1st District At-Large. For the 2015-2019 council term, Mayor Sly James has appointed Wagner as Mayor Pro Tem, as well as Chairman of the Finance and Governance Committee. He also serves as a member of the Housing Committee.
The 1st District includes most of the Clay County portion of Kansas City.
Scott grew up in the Northland and attended North Kansas City School District schools, graduating from Oak Park High School in 1989. He then worked his way through college including spending his senior year working at the Clay County Economic Development Council and graduated from William Jewell College in 1994 with a Bachelor degree of Science in History, Business and Economics.
He began his professional career in marketing and public relations as marketing director of the City Market in 1995. For the next four years Scott worked diligently to bring attention to the market and the surrounding area. His efforts resulted in hundreds of events and millions of visitors to the area throughout the year. Scott founded Wagner Marketing, a small marketing and public relations firm. He then went to work for a local marketing and advertising agency in 2007, and returned to private practice in 2010.
At the same time, Scott began volunteering for a number of different organizations including Teaching & Reaching Youth, the Stop Violence Coalition, Coro Kansas City, the Harry S. Truman Library & Museum and many others. He currently serves as a board member of the Greater Kansas City Convention & Visitors Association. He is also a member of the Northland Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Scott began his work on neighborhood issues in 2003 when he moved from the Northland to start a family in Kansas City’s Historic Northeast area with his wife, Laura. Scott joined the Indian Mound Neighborhood Association and served for three years as treasurer and three more as president. He also served on the board of directors of the Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, Cliff Drive Corridor Management Committee, Kansas City Museum Advisory Board, Old Northeast, Inc. as well as the Northeast Community Center Steering Committee.
Through Scott’s work in the public sector and as a small business owner and neighborhood leader, he understands that improvement can only happen when businesses can grow and residents feel safe and secure in their own neighborhood. Scott hopes to use his experience and passion for community to protect the interests of the 1st District and make policy decisions that will benefit all Kansas Citians.
