**Notice to all applicants**
Please note that walk-in hours have been temporarily reduced to 8:30am-3:00pm Monday-Friday (excluding major holidays).
Exceptions to these changes to walk-in hours are:
- Emergency Permit situations
- Homeowners for work being performed by the homeowner
- Zoning Clearances for Business Licenses
Walk-in applicants are highly encouraged to apply for their permit applications online via CompassKC prior to arriving at City Hall. This is intended to help ensure seamless and expedient service by city staff. Please visit our Compass KC Help Guides for more information.
Updates: Beginning January 1, 2024, a staked survey is required. All new structures, additions (including vertical), and changes (expansion or reduction) to the exterior envelope of a structure shall be accompanied by a sealed land survey showing the existing and new construction per requirements defined in this document.
Exceptions: (the following will require a site plan but not a sealed survey):
- One- and Two-Family Residential open decks greater than 5 feet from a property line, as determined by KCMO GIS or other vetted documentation.
- One- and Two-Family Residential dwellings and their accessory structures greater than 10 feet from a property line, as determined by KCMO GIS or other vetted documentation.
About Us
The Permits Division issues construction related permits, zoning determinations, zoning clearances for business licenses, and zoning conformation verification letters. The Permits Division also processes applications related to construction permits from initial submittal to permit issuance. Staff also oversees contractor licensing.
Walk-in Customer Hours
Applicants for building permits may come into City Hall 5th floor to speak with a Permit Technician in person Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM (excluding observed holidays). Walk-in customers are advised to arrive on the 5th floor no later than 4:15 PM to ensure timely service. Walk-in customers are served on a strict first come first serve basis.
Please be sure to bring any applicable CompassKC application numbers or site address, and any applicable information for your project or question.
Walk-in customers will be asked to sign in at the front counter and may be asked to show a valid government issued identification (e.g., driver's license).
