Kansas City has led the way in the region by implementing several initiatives to support our LGBTQ+ residents and employees. All people are welcome no matter their race, religion, sex, or gender identity.

In May 2023, the Kansas City Council approved a resolution designating the City of Kansas City a safe haven for gender-affirming healthcare.

The City of Kansas City recognized the International Transgender Day of Visibility on Friday, March 31, 2023.
- The event welcomed Admiral Rachel L. Levine, MD the Assistant Secretary for Health with the Department of Health and Human Services. She is the highest-ranking transgender person in the Federal Government.
  
  Also present were community members JD Bezares, the Housing Commissioner for City of Kansas City LGBTQ Commission, Nyla Foster, Digital Organizer for PROMO, Kelly Nou, a Kansas City Trans Activist and Icon, Jordan Burns, a KC Trans Youth Leader, and Merrique Jenson the Founder & Executive Director, Transformations, alongside City leadership to acknowledge the importance of this day.

Resolution declaring October LGBTQ+ History Month.
Declaring June Pride Month, celebrating the Heartland Men’s Chorus continuous support of the LGBTQIA+ community and authorizing the City Manager to display flags celebrating LGBTQ+ Pride Month. (Resolution 230505)
Reaffirming the City’s opposition to legislation that is discriminatory toward any citizen of the State of Missouri and harmful to the state’s economy, including the numerous anti-LGBTQ+ bills filed this year. (Resolution 230075)
Appointing Justice T. Horn as a governance advisor to the Mayor and City Council for the newly established Kansas City Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer Commission to assist them in appointing board members to the Commission who are broadly reflective of and sensitive to the needs of the LGBTQ community’s diverse population. Recognizing the anniversary of the Kansas City LGBTQ Commission in the City of Kansas City. (Special Action 221081)
Condemning recent acts of vandalism targeting the LGBTQ+ community in Kansas City and reaffirming the City’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and creating a safe and welcoming environment for all citizens, workers, and visitors. (Resolution 220602)
Officials raised a Pride flag atop City Hall on June 2, 2022, to kick off a month-long celebration of the Citywide commitment to the LGBTQ+ community.

Resolution directing the City Manager, in collaboration with the City’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer Commission, to develop a plan that addresses the housing and shelter concerns, needs and options for persons who are houseless and LGBTQ in Kansas City, with the goal of promoting equality for such persons and all unhoused persons in Kansas City. City Council passes Resolution 210753 recognizing the service and dedication of the Kansas City Pride Community Alliance for planning and execution of the City's Pride Parade and Festival (8/26/21)
Starting August 2021, Kansas Citians will be able to walk proudly across three new colorful additions to KC streets in Midtown. The Office of the City Manager partnering with the LGBTQ Commission to install four Pride Progress themed crosswalks at the intersection of 39th St. and Summit this coming August 2021 in front of the historic LGBTQ+ establishment, Missie B’s.

City Signs Resolution to Promote All-Gender Restrooms in City Facilities (6/17/21)
City flies the Progress Pride Flag atop City Hall - (6/3/21)
Single occupancy or all-gender restroom facilities are coming in newly constructed and renovated restrooms on city-owned properties.
