The PIAC Program
The City of Kansas City relies on residents to recommend areas for improvements throughout the City. Filling out a request form is the best way to bring attention to areas that are in need of repair, reconstruction, or development. Your application will be reviewed by the Public Improvements Advisory Committee (PIAC) for potential funding from the following fiscal year's budget. The funding for PIAC projects comes from the 1% sales tax. Applications are due August 31, 2024. You will receive notification of PIAC's decision the following April. If your Y42 project is selected for funding, the funds for the projects will be allocated to the appropriate City department after May 1, 2025.

After Submitting an Application
You can follow up on the status of your request by emailing piac@kcmo.org or calling the PIAC Office at (816) 513-1062.
We recommend attending the summer public PIAC hearings. Two hearings are held each summer within each district. You can also reach out to the PIAC representatives for your district.
Last Year's Statistics
In PIAC Year 41, we received 1082 applications. If the City were to complete every project that was submitted, the total cost would have been over $696.6 million. The amount of money PIAC was able to allocate was $30.1 million (about $5 million per district). If your request wasn't chosen, it may have still been a worthy endeavor, but not everyone's projects can be selected for PIAC funding. Keep reapplying!

This list comes from the City's annual budget and can be found under the "Capital and Debt Overview" section.
Tips for PIAC Submittals
Attend the public PIAC hearings in the summer.
We offer two meetings per district. You will have the opportunity to speak directly to the committee members responsible for selecting projects for your district. The PIAC Calendar provides all of the meeting details.
Divide larger projects into phases.
PIAC does not have enough funds to support multimillion dollar projects. Consider asking for funding for just the design stage of the project. Similarly, if you are requesting funds for three new features at a local park, consider breaking them up into separate applications and provide a priority number so the committee knows which of the requested features is most important to the neighborhood.
Consider how many people are affected.
Committee members will often examine the number of people impacted by your request. Are you asking for the curbs in front of only your house? This only impacts a couple people. Generally, requests that affect more people Please note: we do not recommend having the neighborhood fill out multiple applications. This can cause confusion. Instead, create a petition with names and addresses of all those affected by the request and email it to piac@kcmo.org by October 1 to get it attached to the application.
