In addition to these services, the  CDP/PHP division also does important work behind-the-scenes.

Disease surveillance is important to detect potential outbreaks of illness within Kansas City.

Communicable Disease (CD) staff verify reports of diseases, outbreaks, and investigate the source and cycle of the disease.

This information is often used as a resource for the general public, schools and day cares as well as community and medical entities regarding infectious diseases, infection control and prevention and pandemic preparedness.

There is a long list of 100+ diseases and conditions that are required by law to be reported to the health department's CDP/PHP program.

This allows disease investigators and public health specialists to:

  • monitor disease trends
  • evaluate disease impacts
  • control and ultimately eliminate the disease threat

Local health departments also play a key role in emergencies through Public Health Preparedness.

To prepare for the worst, the Public Health Preparedness staff have frequent training and coursework requirements so that they can help lead Kansas City during disasters, respond when emergencies occur, and lend support through the recovery process.
