The Violence Free Kansas City Committee (VFKCC) is a subcommittee of the Health Commission, which advises the Mayor and City Council on matters related to the KC Community Health Improvement Plan (KC-CHIP), public health, and public health policies. Committee members represent various sectors of our city such as the faith-based sector, education sector, and healthcare sector.

The VFKCC helped to develop the KC Blueprint for Violence Prevention and a Safe and Healthy Community, a list of violence reduction strategies for several sectors of Kansas City, Missouri: the business sector, faith-based sector, law enforcement sector, etc.

The VFKCC currently seeks to advise the Health Commission on policy that can lead to violence prevention and to serve as an advisory board for Health Department violence prevention activities.

The Behavioral Health and Injury Prevention Division is involved with:

  • Partners for Peace:
The Partners for Peace Program offers social services to victims of violent crime, the family members of homicide victims, those who are likely to commit crimes and those who have been previously incarcerated.
  • Aim4Peace Program:
The Aim4Peace Violence Prevention Program is an evidence-based, public health method to reduce trauma and prevent violence, especially retaliatory violence in Kansas City, MO East Patrol Division. The Aim4Peace program has a team of proactive first responders who:

1) provide one-on-one case management and teach conflict resolution skills,
2) intervene in violent situations to broker peace and
3) appear at hospitals after penetrating injuries occur in order to prevent retaliatory violence.

The program connects residents to wrap around community resources within the 7 life domains and all other needs as identified. The program also offers educational opportunities on Trauma Informed Care, Mental Health First Aid (Youth/Adult), conflict resolution skills, other alternatives to violence and essential life skills. Staff also contributed to the development and implementation of the KC Blueprint, which promotes citywide policies and strategies that support nonviolence and safe, healthy communities.

  • Youth Healthy Relationship, Social Skill Development & Suicide Prevention Program:
This program provides education, curricula, and interactive classes for youth, teachers, and parents. The topics range from dating violence to youth suicide prevention and bully-prevention, from general health topics to addiction resources. This education is available to a wide range of youth audiences through schools, churches, youth-serving organizations and others who work with youth in Kansas City.
  • Office of Violence Prevention:

The Office of Violence Prevention oversees violence prevention contracts and works to assist neighborhoods to implement KC Blueprint strategies.
