“Raise Less Corn and More Hell! Annie Diggs: A Prairie Populist” explores the life of Annie Diggs, a journalist, orator, poet, advocate of women and black suffrage, temperance worker, and populist advocate. This work explores the racism, sexism, and anti-immigrant rhetoric that was part of the Populist movement in the United States during the 1890s, Annie’s struggles within the Populist movement in Kansas, as well as the similarities between this movement and the Populist movement sweeping the country today.
