Kansas City Chalk and Walk, a Missouri nonprofit corporation, will conduct an annual, two day event, which will showcase hundreds of professional, student and amateur artists who will create powerful and lively chalk paintings in sponsored asphalt/brick canvas . ***The Italian Madonnari (because they re-created images of the Madonna) have been traced to sixteen century Italy*** The creation of chalk painting take many hours and is often not as simple as it seems. First, the artists will draw an outline on paper, of the original painting in proper proportion using pencil or charcoal pastel. Some artists use the mathematical "grid system". Then they begin to lay the base colors. Using a number of chalk pastels, the artist layers the chalk, blending the colors to create shadow, contrast and depth. As passionate street painters will tell you, this is "performance art", where the process of creating the work is more, or as important as the finished piece.
