PIAC Projects

Kansas City relies on residents to recommend areas for improvements in the community by submitting a request to the Public Improvements Advisory Committee (PIAC).

If you have submitted a PIAC Project you can search for details of the project with your PIAC number.

If you have questions related to a PIAC project, you can contact the PIAC Office at (816) 513-1062 or piac@kcmo.org.

Project Description:

The Kansas City Public Works Department is kicking off a study of Bannister Road to identify existing and future needs along the corridor.  The limits of the study are from I-435 on the west to State Route 350 on the east.  The study will focus on transportation issues and the improvements needed to support surrounding neighborhoods and businesses. Bannister Road streetview

The Bannister Road Corridor study area is 7 miles long.  Its character varies from highly urbanized to rural to suburban.

As we work through the study, we will identify necessary improvements and develop recommendations to guide future capital improvements along Bannister Road.

Project Study Includes:
  • Traffic evaluation
  • Study of existing conditions
  • Public engagement to determine concerns, ideas and vision for the corridor
  • Estimation of costs for final design and construction (pending funding)
  • A final report with recommendations for improvements

There is no funding for construction at this time.

Public Engagement:

The project is currently in the planning phase and will engage the public for input.  The objective of public engagement is to create meaningful opportunities for affected stakeholders, residents, businesses and those traveling along the corridor to offer feedback for improving Bannister Road. Public input gathered through the engagement process will help inform the development of alternatives that best meet the diverse needs of those who utilize the corridor.

Previous public meetings were held on March 23, 2021 and November 10, 2021

We've taken public engagement virtually! Head over to the interactive social pinpoint site to learn more and provide your feedback.

Join us for an open house!

Please join us at the KCPD South Patrol Community Room, 9701 Marion Park Drive, on Tuesday May 10 for an open house review of the Blue Ridge Boulevard Streetscape Improvements and the Bannister Road corridor study. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m.,  with brief introductions at 6 and 7 p.m. for each project.  This will be the final meeting to provide feedback and view conceptual designs and preferred alternatives for the two projects.

Please send us your questions, ideas, or concerns by contacting the Public Works Public Information Officer, Maggie Green

Traffic Impact:

This project is currently in the planning and preliminary design phase, there is no impact to traffic at this time.

Project Timeline:

The planning phase is underway. We are currently working with the planning study team on gathering data and the public engagement process. The team plans to work with the community through the end of 2022to review previous recommendations, understand current issues and desires, develop concepts, identify a preferred alternative, and estimate improvement costs. We anticipate the planning phase to be complete by the end of 2022.

Currently, no funding is available for design and construction of recommended improvements, but continued planning is necessary for Bannister Road's future if and/or when funding becomes available.

Other Initiatives along the Corridor:

This study is being conducting in conjunction with an on-going project to study Blue Ridge Boulevard from E 87th St. to Bannister Road. For more information about the Blue Ridge Streetscape Study, click here.
