Business owners along 135th Street in the Martin City neighborhood are celebrating as construction rolls to completion along the corridor, revealing a new and improved streetscape while also checking off another Year 1 GO KC project.

The final phase of improvements on 135th began just over a year ago from Wornall Road to M-150 Highway and recently ended. Improvements along the roadway include: a widened, three-lane road; new pavement; curbs; sidewalks and streetlights; improved storm drainage; and an 8-foot multi-use trail on the north side.

The first phase of the project improved the roadway from Holmes Road to Oak Street and concluded in late 2014. The Cornerstone Award-winning second phase continued improvements from Oak Street to Wornall Road and wrapped up in 2016. The Complete Streets improvements on 135th stretch one mile from Holmes Road to M-150 Highway.

“We are thrilled to complete the final phase of roadway improvements on 135th Street, “ says Kim Pemberton, project manager with the Kansas City Public Works Department. “This was a highly anticipated project and a great investment for the neighborhood.”

City leaders and project representatives will celebrate with a ribbon cutting on Friday, April 5, at 2 p.m.
