Mayor Lucas and Mayor Pro Tem Ryana Parks-Shaw Introduce Multidisciplinary Public Safety Task Force

Kansas City, Mo – Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas and Mayor Pro Tem Ryana Parks-Shaw will unveil the framework for the Multidisciplinary Public Safety Task Force on Tuesday, August 15 at 9 a.m. at the Fast Stop at 500 E. 10th Street.

In July, City Council passed an ordinance creating the Multidisciplinary Public Safety Task Force, tasked with identifying businesses, establishments, or properties with a high number of violent incidents, 311 complaints, and emergency calls, and to engage with the business owners to find improvements. The task force will focus on identifying environmental factors contributing to crime, including lighting, trash and illegal dumping, graffiti, and any business violations.

Made up of city staff from departments including the Health Department, Public Works, Parks and Recreation, Regulated Industries, and Municipal Court, the task force will conduct site visits, identify areas for improvement, and then work with property owners to fix those issues.

The task force had its first site visit on August 8 at Fast Stop, where there was a murder in June, 59 calls for service, and 14 police reports filed in the past year. At the site visit, city staff inspected conditions of the business and identified areas contributing to the lack of safety, including overgrown weeds, trash, and graffiti.

At Tuesday’s press conference, Mayor Lucas, Mayor Pro Tem Parks-Shaw, and members of the Multidisciplinary Public Safety Task Force will share more about the site visit and the task force’s plans moving forward. Mayor Lucas will also sign the ordinance.

As a reminder, the Mayor’s Office requested the revocation of business licenses and closure of the businesses operating as unlicensed clubs at 5644 Prospect Avenue and 5646 Prospect Avenue last month after a mass shooting claimed the lives of three people and injuring nine others. The Multidisciplinary Public Safety Task Force will be charged with reaching businesses seeing similar issues and holding them accountable.
