The GIS & Data section of Long Range Planning is responsible for maintaining various public datasets associated with land use and development. In addition, staff utilizes geographic data, building permits data, and a collection of demographic variables to analyze relationships and extract meaningful insights from defined areas within city boundaries.

The purpose of the Future Land Use map is to illustrate the types of land uses that would ideally occur in the future in different areas throughout the city. These land use designations include different development densities, intensities, and types. Future Land Use describes the desired use of a site as per adopted area plans, and may differ from a site's current use or development pattern. This map should be used to guide future development and rezoning requests. Definitions for each land use category (commercial, industrial, mixed use neighborhood, etc.) can be found in the respective Area Plan for each region of the city. While the City of Kansas City, Missouri makes every effort to keep the Future Land Use map up to date, feel free to contact the Long Range Planner in that area for confirmation or questions. The Historic Preservation office works with the Historic Preservation Commission to oversee the Kansas City Register – a list of historically significant districts, sites, buildings, structures and objects.

The Long Range Planning section works with property owners, developers, neighborhood groups, community agencies, and local businesses to develop Area Plans for the City’s 18 geographic areas while also implementing the City’s comprehensive plan, the KC Spirit Playbook.
