Filing a Housing Complaint
If you feel you have been discriminated against when seeking housing, and you want the Civil Rights & Equal Opportunity Department (CREO) to investigate, you'll need to file a complaint.
Exemptions from the City's Fair Housing ordinance
- Owner-occupied buildings with no more than four units.
- Housing operated by religious organizations.
Before filing a complaint, consider the following:
- The alleged discriminatory act must have occurred within the last 180 days; and,
- The property you are seeking to buy, rent or move in to must be located within the city limits of Kansas City, Missouri; and,
- The same claim must not have been previously filed with another agency, i.e. HUD, Missouri Commission on Human Rights; and,
- You must be 18 years old or older to file a complaint. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must file on your behalf.
To file a housing complaint, including a Source of Income Discrimination allegation:
- Please visit myKCMO, or
- Complete, print and sign the Civil Rights Housing Intake Questionnaire, and mail or hand deliver to our office at City Hall, 414 E. 12th Street, Ste. 404, 4th Floor, Kansas City, Missouri, 64106. You may also email it to CREOcivilrights@kcmo.org.
