Fire Marshal Division & Fire PreventionThe Kansas City Missouri Fire Department’s Fire Marshal’s Division is responsible for all fire code enforcement, fire investigations, and public education within the approximately 319 square miles of the city across three counties. The office consists of one Chief Fire Marshal, two Assistant Fire Marshals, an ADC of Planning Reviews, eight  Fire Investigators, 14 Inspectors, and two Public Education Specialists. This Division inspects more than 25,000 buildings, investigates more than 1,500 fires a year, and reaches approximately 300,000 people with fire safety material annually.

Fire Prevention & Safety Tips

Space Heater Safety Tips:

  • Keep flammable items like paper, clothing, bedding, curtains or rugs at least three feet away from space heaters.
  •  Turn off space heaters before going to bed or leaving home.
  • Only use space heaters on a level, hard and nonflammable surface, not on rugs or carpets.
  • Keep children and pets away from space heaters.
  • When buying a space heater, look for models that shut off automatically if the heater tips over. 
  • Only plug in space heaters into a wall outlet - never use an extension cord or a strip outlet.

Winter Holiday Safety Tips:

  • Keep lit candles away from decorations and other things that can burn.
  • Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of light strands to connect.
  • Blow out lit candles when you leave the room or go to bed.
  • Turn off all light strings and decorations before leaving home or going to bed.
