Community and Family Health Education

KCHD’s Community and Family Health Education division makes a variety of valuable programs and partnerships—from child care to job training, health care to medical services—available to the public. Please take a moment to look over the educational opportunities listed here

Reduce Harm and Violence

KCHD’s Maternal and Child Health Block Grant works with partners to reduce or prevent injuries in Kansas City, helping to keep people safe and protected.

Have a Nurse Visit You at Home

The Nurse Family Partnership Program is a home visitation program for first-time mothers. This program serves up to 100 women in the seven counties of Clay, Cass, Jackson, Johnson, Lafayette, Platte and Ray. Participants receive pregnancy and health education, referrals for health care, child-care, job training and education, and help toward improving economic self-sufficiency.

Apply for WIC Services

WIC (Women, Infants and Children) is a federally funded Supplemental Nutrition Program administered by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) through the Missouri department of Health and Senior Services.

Because of the large number and location of clinics currently providing WIC services, KCHD does not provide these services.

Special Health Care Needs

The Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs Program provides case management for a variety of medical-related services to assist children who are medically qualified, and whose families meet income eligibility guidelines, to reach their developmental, emotional and cognitive potential.

In addition to this contract, the State of Missouri pays for up to $25,000 per year per child for needed services, including hospitalization, medications, technological assistive devices, therapies and other authorized services.

The services are provided for 17 counties in the Northwest District by the Missouri Department of State and Senior Services.

Help for People Living with HIV/AIDS

The HIV Prevention and Care Planning Council is a community based, mayoral-appointed council comprising service providers and people living with HIV/AIDS.

Its mission is to enhance HIV prevention and care services through community planning of interventions and make recommendations for HIV/AIDS prevention and funding allocation within the Kansas City Planning Region.

The Council’s prevention programs provide behavioral, evidence-based training for high-risk individuals in the community, as well as for those residents who are already HIV positive or who have AIDS.

Community Support

The Kansas City Health Department actively supports community-based health initiatives through its Community Engagements division. KCHD supports, chairs, and participates in multiple councils, commissions and community-based projects, including the committees of the Health Commission, Coalition of Hispanic Organizations, Native American Symposium, and the Community Initiative on Cardiovascular Health.

Successful past programs include the Tobacco Use Prevention Program (instrumental in developing workplace clean air policies for Kansas City and the surrounding metropolitan area), Walkers On Watch program, Cardiovascular Health Initiative, the Healthy Reader program and Health Literacy Initiative.
