KC Pet Project’s approach is to use proven strategies, community engagement and focused strategies of creating a safe and humane community through owner education, community outreach and follow-up on each call for service. Their focus is to ensure residents are in compliance with the municipal code by responding to calls, issuing notices to correct or warnings, exploring solutions with pet owners to achieve compliance and maintaining a safe and humane community for people and pets.

The Animal Services division have staff on duty from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day and officers on-duty after-hours and overnight for priority call response. Our Animal Services Officers will respond to reported animal-related code violations, reported bite incidents, animal cruelty and abandonment concerns, calls for assistance from KCPD and KCFD and wildlife in living areas when it presents a rabies exposure concern. Animal Services does not respond to calls for deceased animal pickups unless the deceased animal was involved in a bite or rabies exposure (please dial 311 for assistance for deceased animals).

Keeping pets and families together is a community value that we embrace at KC Pet Project. When pets get lost, they are often very close to their home. If you are able to provide a safe place for that pet until its owner can be found,  you are helping to fulfill this community value. All pets picked up by KC Pet Project’s Animal Services Division are taken to the KC Campus for Animal Care,  7077 Elmwood Avenue, Kansas City, MO 64132. The Admissions department of KC Pet Project is open from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Sunday. Stray pets are held at the shelter for five business days before they are placed up for adoption. Cats or dogs relinquished by their owners to the shelter are placed for adoption the next day.

KC Pet Project operates the KC Campus for Animal Care, Kansas City, Missouri’s animal shelter, which is open for adoptions Monday-Saturday from Noon to 6 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. The new KC Campus for Animal Care, located at 7077 Elmwood Ave., opened on Jan. 1, 2020.

KC Pet Project operates the shelter for the City along with other adoption locations. Pet licenses also can be purchased at the shelter when picking up your new friend or can be obtained through your veterinarian with a valid rabies certificate. Microchips are also available for purchase for $25 at the KC Campus for Animal Care or Zona Rosa Adoption Center and no appointment is needed. Residents are required by Chapter 14 of the Code of Ordinances to license their cats, dogs and ferrets. This can be done at the City’s Animal Shelter, at a veterinarians office if they are authorized to process licenses or at the PetData website.
